Bodies Left Behind

Patrick Nagle '10, English 65, The Cyborg Self, Brown University (Fall 2006)

A common theme among these texts is transcending the body and moving into a higher plane. This appeal to spirituality, mysticism, or the totality of knowledge and information directly counteracts the liberating potentials of cyborgs to disrupt totalizing narratives and ideologies. With their reliance on ideas of the transmigration of souls (see Alex Rosenthal's piece The Transmigration of Ghosts these texts seek to reclaim the all-knowing, all-seeing One that Haraway explicitly rejects as a myth of Western phallogocentrism. Donna Haraway charts an alternative to mysticism by insisting that subjects can only attain partial, firmly-embodied perspective (Haraway, "Situated Knowledges").
