Survival of the Fittest (VERSION 2.0)

Jomo Fray '10, English 65, The Cyborg Self, Brown University (Fall 2006)

Even in this day and age strength and power are means of survival. The will to survive continues to burn brightly in the human soul. In the anime Ghost in the Shell, this intensity has been transferred to the cold steel frames of the cyborg ghost. Do Darwinian theories of survival still rein in a world of humans and humans++? The deadly precision of Motoko Kusanagi make the unaltered human stand little chance against the near godlike precision of this new species. A super species that man may never be able to surpass, because that is exactly what cyborgs are designed to do. Man's fight with technology can be juxaposed with Rick Deckard's fight with the combat replicant Roy, in Bladerunner. Man can hide and try to compete but the superior strength, speed, and sight of the common android makes victory impossible. The paranoia seen in films like matrix and I,robot are a reflection of men's fear of a metallic tommorow.
