She was four. It was her birthday. Everyone in her nursery school crowded around.

"What'd you get? What'd you get? What'd you get?"

She was just glowing, in brand new shoes with ruffled pink socks that matched her brand new dress birthday clothes she'd been staring at (can't wait!) in the closet for a week.

"I got big cake, and balloons, and a new bicycle, with streamers, and legos, and --"

"Legos!" Jeff Warner made a big face, and all the kids laughed. "You can't play with legos! They're for boys. They're boys' toys. You're a girl. You can't play with boy's toys."
