"See you at the top, Drake. I'm too old for those damn stairs." Almost to punctuate it, a mighty cough shakes my body.
"Good luck, old man," and he's gone. I hop in the elevator and jam the top floor--straight up to 200. They fly by, the white number scrolling across the list of floors like the character in some ancient arcade game. I'm at 100 and counting, going strong--and them BAM, elevator stops dead and I'm hurled against the roof. I hit the ground and hear a soft buzz as a monitor appears in the wall behind me. A man's face takes up most of the screen, and he's got this kind of benevolent cruel smile.
"The Awakening is coming to us all, Mr. Fenix. I am afraid your attempts to stop it are... headed for a fall."
And the elevator car drops.
I've got seconds to do this. I tear open the panel at the door and stick my fingers into the wires. I rip and tear and clutch them in my fingers, electricity currents rippling through the elevator's white walls--the walls themselves start flickering on and off and shit I've got to get them back together and falling falling falling
As the lights flicker, I waste a millisecond staring in disbelief.
Figures it'd come down to this.
I pick the red wire.
I pick the blue wire.
