"Its iconography does present some interesting juxtapositions," agreed Mr. Gilby, stroking his goatee thoughtfully. "For instance, the caduceus and - is that mistletoe?"

"I daresay it could be kept in better repair," frowned Madame Vereaux. "And it doesn't admit so very much light, does it?"

"I would say," began Sir Thomas, "that the importance of this piece is not its aesthetic appeal, nor even the interpretation of its individual symbols. Rather, it is the arrangement of the whole - the cyclical progression that is suggested from one element to the next. Allow me to explain."
