Gender Theory and Semiological Theory

The relation of gender theory and linguistic theory is made clear by Judith Butler's work. She denaturalizes gender categories by proposing that they are performative. She employs the concept she terms 'ambivalence', which is directly related to Derrida's term differance.
Postmodern linguistic theory, which theorizes the collapse of distinctions between self and other, and copy and original, fits right into gender theorists who would like to denaturalize compulsory heterosexuality, gender roles and the masculine-feminine binary.
