Paths and trails provide

• Reader constraint (Storyspace guard fields: the document the reader experiences changes the more one reads)
• Reader assistance: guided tours (see the tour of this website)
• Means of sharing readings

But are they anti-hypertext? Do their constraints outweigh their benefits? One solution: permit readers to leave the paths by offering escape links, such as the linked footer icons in docs on this website.
