But women have traditionally been encouraged to take up as little space as
possible. Ever look at a group of people in a room? You will find that
most often, most men sit with their legs spread out, or with the ankle of
one leg resting on the knee of the other leg. The women cross their legs,
huddle into the corner of their seat. So even in such a benign activity as
sitting, women take up less space than men.
Anther manifestation of women trying (and succeeding) to take up less
space is
anorexia, where women force their bodies to waste away (Bordo 16).
Women can take up more space when they write in hypertext. Perhaps this
appropriation of more literary space will
translate into women wanting to
take up more physical space.
