In Moravec's text, the image that underlies this vision of near-future is the prosthesis, which in turn generates a vision of a protean self at two distinct levels of that metaphor: First, technological equipment becomes the user's prosthesis, and at the same time the body itself becomes a hyperpragmatic prosthesis in a world of virtual realities.
