Bruce Sterling [1954-]

Sterling was born on April 14th, 1954, in Brownsville, Texas, to M. B. Sterling and Gloria Vela.

Sterling attended the University of Texas, Austin, from 1972 to 1976. He married Nancy Adell Baxter in 1979, during which time he was employed as a proof-reader and sat on the Texas Legislative Councile. By 1983 he was a full time writer. Along with his novels, his numerous short stories (published in such magizines as Omni, Isaax Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, and Europe's Interzone), Sterling has been known to publish in journalism (Wired Magazine, for instance). He is well cited as both a critic and a theorist; his literature aims to reveal the technology of a global 21st century with "visionary intensity and imaginative concentration."

Bruce Sterling is the author of the non-fiction book The Hacker Crackdown, as well as the novels Heavy Weather, Involution Ocean, The Artificial Kid, Schismatrix, and Islands in the Net and the short story collections Crystal Express and Globalhead. He co-authored, with William Gibson, the critically acclaimed novel The Difference Engine. He also edited Mirrorshades, the definitive cyberpunk anthology. He lives with his wife and daughter in Austin, Texas.
