Because hypertext deals with multiple texts, a networked hypertext system "produce a sense of authorship, authorial property, and creativity that differs markedly from that associated with book technology." The ability of the reader to control what he or she wants to read reduces the authorial control of what is written.

"The goal of the literary work . . . is to make the reader no longer a consumer, but a producer of the text (S/Z 4)." Therefore, through navigation, a reader becomes the producer of her own set of readings, and reads only what she chooses to.

If this is really deem as the "goal of the literary work", then a hypertext network would serves Barthes' intention.
