Artaud's incarceration from 1937 to 1946 in several insane asylums may be perceived as an instance of Fascism. The normalising structures of the asylums, its violent recourse to electro-shock therapy, its attempt to produce obedient subjects with fixed interiorities, are all indicative of the Fascistic Desire to produce unitary identities (identification with bourgeois taste).
