Metaphors awaken our collective cultural memory, those cultural codes that Barthes talks about in S/Z. The only thing to be wary of is that any metaphor you choose must be properly targeted to your audience. After all, if you don't even understand the familiar part of the analogy, you will be lost in trying to comprehend the new aspect.
