Midsomer Ridge and Deep River

A CB&Q mixed freight crosses Pether Bridge towards Barnaby Tunnel in the Midsomer Ridge area. The GP7 bears the motto "Way of the Zephyrs, and the other loco has "Everywhere West," which was the CB&Q's other motto. CB&Q, which in 1934 began the first diesel-electric passenger trains in the United States, called their top passenger trains Zephyrs.

After those first locos were retired, CB&Q continued the names but used more modern engines such as the E-7 and E-8. One of the old Zephyrs is preserved in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. The CB&Q, or the Burlington Route, the "Q," or just the Burlington still lives on — sort of. It merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and a couple of others to become the Burlington Northern in 1970. In 1996, it merged with the Santa Fe and became part of what is now known as BNSF Railway. [Click on images to enlarge them.]
