Ulmer on Discipline & Entertainment
In the same way that Brecht used the alienation effect to introduce critical
distance into popular theartrical entertainments, the chorographer introduces
empathy, projection, and identification effects into critical theory, as
in the reading together of Derrida and Wren. The gap separating the discourses
of Discipline and Entertainment has to be crossed in both directions. The
point is not to reduce one to the other but to open a circuit between them.
