When we arrive at the beginning of the shift, Clancy gives a briefing of hours. Each crewmember is scheduled for one of three eight-hour shifts, from 4 am to 12 pm, 12 pm to 8 pm, or 8 pm to 4 am. Eleven men work on each shift, five two-person teams and a supervisor. Each of the teams is in charge of a specific set of guns, so after the briefing, we take a snowmobile up the hill to a string of HKDs on Edelweiss and I watch as the snowmakers start to get them started. On the flatter parts of the hill, below the headwall, two guys drag a ground gun into position so it will blow snow into a mound that will later be groomed out as part of the base.
