As one of the few departments that produces a product, rather than provides a service, snowmakers play an interesting role in the structure of the resort.  They are known as the strong, silent type.  Their erratic hours in relative isolation from other parts of the resort, and grueling working conditions leads to a strong sense of friendship between the teams.
“They work in the cold and the dark, often soaking wet with the winds gusting 30 to 40.  It’s slippery and the footing is poor… they really get hooked on it.  It becomes a lifelong drive,” says Dennis.  “Most of the guys, about 85%, are from within a 30 mile radius: West Valley, Franklinville, Little Valley, Salamanca… In the summer they’re farmers or carpenters.  Bob Klahn, who’s been doing it for 26 years owns a turf care business.  Making snow becomes a badge of honor, it really does."
