One drawback of being a snowmaker is that if you do a good job, there might not be any work left to do when spring arrives. The object of snowmaking, like that of tutoring or marriage counseling, is to create a scenario in which you are no longer needed. Unfortunately, it also means that you’re out of a job. Six to eight weeks after the season begins, snowmakers reduce their schedules from three shifts a day to two. A typical season for the snowmaking crew ends in late February or early March, sometimes two months away from the end of ski season. After the season is over, though, the snowmakers have a few final events that shake things up before they settle down for the summer.
