It’s not that the lights ever went out, exactly; they would just dim slightly, a thing that you couldn’t be sure you had actually seen.  To verify our sanity, we made comments, “They’re snowmaking tonight.”  “Yes, good night for it.”  The sound, too, was something you weren’t totally aware of until the guns went off.  A low, tremulous wooshing, it was a lot like the wind, but steadier; and when you got up close, much louder.
