Linking
The act of linking itself is a form of
criticism, of writing.
The link is a text, it has
meaning. The act of joining lexias indicates that the have a relationship
to each other, possibly a complementary one, possibly a contradictory one. These
links allow the reader to become writers, not only to choose the path they are
taking (which may be a limited empowerment since the reader does not know ahead of
time where the link will take them), but also to interpret the reasons the lexias are joined.
By revealing the mechanics of the composition, the hypertext document also empowers the
reader to criticize and disagree with the author. Hypertext works against the illusion
of unity in a text, and thus against the supreme power of the author as creator of meaning.
The reader can more easily deconstruct the text and decide for themself which lexias are
meaning-ful, and which are not.
