MISSION IN PLAY...

Jack's contact has a simple codename: Mr Wolf. Through him, Jack is supposed to find out whether authors, as defined by Barthes & Foucault, still exist, or will continue to exist? They conduct their meeting on a bench in a park.

JACK:
Using Foucault's ideas, the answer is simple isn't it?

MR WOLF:
That's right. He himself pointed out that the "author-function" differed throughout time and genres. He said that "it does not seem necessary that the authors-function remain constant in form, complexity, and even in existence."

JACK:
Since the idea depends on society, it changes as society changes. What about Barthes?

MR WOLF:
Barthes himself has said in our world today, the ones who exist are: "author-writers". Why? He said it's because: "We want to write something, and at the same time, we write (intransitively)." That makes sense, doesn't it?

JACK:
Yes it does. But what a headache one has to go through before finding that out!
