Can Hypertext Really do any of this Stuff?

Are we getting too far ahead of ourselves? Or more simply, can hypertext entrance? It is difficult to tell, essentially because there are relatively so few works of hypertext fiction. Perhaps a few reactions to hypertext in its strictest sense -- Joyce's Afternoon or Moulthrop's Victory Garden -- can give us a better impression of hypertext's ability to entrance.

Or is this inherently unfair, in that neither text-dominant works make use of the computer's multimedia capabilities? Perhaps reactions to Myst and Freak Show are equally relevant. After all, while these projects are more clearly geared towards the entertainment industry, they exploit the computer's power to a much greater degree.
